3 steps to changing your money situation

You may have noticed a lot of what I write about now is psychology and the way you think about money, rather than budgeting or money skills themselves. This is because I know first hand that the way you think about your financial situation, and your life, has the biggest impact on your finances.

When people say money is all about energy, what they really mean is, money is all about the energy you put into your thoughts and actions every day, that make up what you have and your future. Have you ever noticed that high energy people seem to attract opportunities, people and fun into their lives effortlessly? Well at least it looks like that on social media. In reality they are making an effort to keep their energy high.

So what is does mean that the level of energy and positivity you generate can affect your life outcomes? And how can  you increase your energy and positivity about life and your finances? Here’s three ways that can really help you learn the process, and stick to it.

  1. Meditation. I know everyone talks about mindfulness, and while you may not be a believer, there is scientific evidence that meditation has an influence on things like blood pressure and stress. That is because it focusses you on your inner self – not everyone else and what you are doing today, but the core of who you are. By learning over time (and it does take time) to meditate and slow your mind, you are taking the first step to changing your energy.
  2. Self reflection and assessment. This might even mean going to see a therapist and talking  about your life. Your past, your childhood, and things that have stuck with you over your life, that still have an influence on you moving forward. Without doing this important work you fall back into the same patterns learned from childhood – and if they are not positive thoughts and patterns you will not change.
  3. Gratitude. Its proven that feeling grateful changes your mindset almost instantly. By waking up and thinking of three things you are grateful for, it can set you up for the day. And during the day, thinking of things you are grateful for with your existing finances can really bring positivity to your financial situation, and increase the energy around making it even better. So look for reasons all the time to be grateful in your life – from that morning coffee to a comfortable bed. Gratitude makes your whole life better, not just your finances.

These action items are ongoing. Once you start them, make them a habit in your life, and watch the changes to your life and your finances. You can then start making your plan around paying off debt and understanding your super better as a first step to increasing your money skills, as well as your energy around money.

Don’t give up – it works. You just have to keep going. Even when you don’t feel like it, or get sick of waiting – your life will get better if you follow the process and make it part of your life.
